Reverent Redesign of a Community’s Heritage

Mishkan Shilo, Jeursalem

The Mishkan Shilo Synagogue houses an old photograph of the hut that served as the community’s place of worship in its inception. To this day, this congregation has a high regard for its founding fathers—immigrants from Bukhara, Uzbekistan, most of whom have since left the neighborhood or passed away. We were asked to design an Aron Kodesh using glass and brass elements to correspond with items the synagogue has owned for many years. The design process was moving and meaningful for us as much as it was for the community, and its outcome—an Aron Kodesh designed, manufactured, and installed by Lavi Furniture—now stands proudly at the heart of this synagogue, to honor its founders.
